1970-1985 at TIFR, Mumbai and 1985-2001 at NCST, Mumbai;
Last 15 years as Head, Graphics and CAD Division, NCST
As Associate Director, NCST for 10 years have played a key role in giving a definition and shape to  many of its R&D, education  and outreach programmes

Significant Achievements

  1. Coordinated, led and successfully executed a significant number of software development oriented research projects with funding from external agencies. These include areas such as geometric modelling, CAD/CAM/CAE, Indian language computing, high end graphics including VR systems and multimedia, Web graphics for E-commerce, etc. Currently Chief investigator for a major national level project on interactive online learning.
  2. Have been actively involved in creating and maintaining collaborative links with major IT suppliers including Digital/Compaq, Intel, Microsoft, Aonix, Rational etc.. These links have enabled NCST to obtain substantive inputs in the form of hardware and software.
  3. Responsible for large projects with funding from international sources. These include :
    leading edge graphics research (European Commission), 
    high end 3D graphics and Multimedia educational content (Intel)
    software education (El Salvador)
    collaborative graphics software R&D (Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics)
    collaborative research in localisation (European Commission)
  4. Have been actively involved in selective technology transfer to industry:
    International 3D Graphics standard software, IndoGKS – based on Graphical Kernel System to CMC Ltd (1983)
    Bilingual word processing to Hinditron Computers Ltd (1986)
    Multilingual text processing systems – Vividha to Electronics Trade and Technology (ET &T) and CMC Ltd (1992)
    Technology transfer, shaping architecture for Indian languages  to Microsoft, USA (1997)
  5. Extensive research and publications record of international repute:
    Large number of research publications in the form of papers in reputed international refereed journals, in the proceedings of national/international conferences and tutorial notes/reports in conferences.
    Member of the editorial board of  three international journals in Computer graphics related areas and also of  national journal.
    Chairman, Publications of Computer Society of India, during 91-95.
    Guest editor of two special issues Computers & Graphics international journal.
    Editor of books, “Graphics, Design and Visualisation” published by North Holland in 1993, “Visual Computing” published as IFIP conference proceedings in 1999 and “Information Technology for Innovation” published by Tata McGraw Hill in 1999.
  6. High Visibility in Professional and Academic circles:
    As Programme Committee Chair have organised a number of widely appreciated highly technical national/international conferences. 
    Invited to be a member of the International Programme Committees of a large number of International Conferences in the field. Presently International Programme Committee Chair for ICCC 2001 on Pervasive Computing – Technical and Social Dimensions, the flagship conference of the International Council for Computer Communication.
    Have been invited as an expert to some exclusive international working conferences, where participation is strictly by invitation:
    The International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) organised SEILLAC II workshop on “Methodology of Interaction” in 1979
    The EC-NSF organised workshop on “Virtual Environments” held in Bonas, Paris in 1999
    The ACM –Intel conference on “Computing Continuum” held in San Francisco in 2000.
    Have been invited to a number of national and international conferences to give invited talks, key note addresses and plenary speeches.
    Have been on the academic council and board of studies of universities in India
    Have been an invited member of a number of national/international expert working groups and monitoring committees of large R&D projects.
    Fellow of the Computer Society of India.
    Governor and Vice President of International Council for Computer Communication (ICCC)
    One of the Directors of the Virtual Heritage Network set up by the International Society of Virtual Systems and Multimedia Society (VSMM)
    Distinguished Visiting Lecturer of the IEEE from the year 2000.
    Chairman of the SRIGMLC, SEARCC Regional Interest Group on Multilingual Computing
  7. Have designed, coordinated and led one of the country’s most respected industry focussed continuing education programmes run by NCST; guided five PhDs in Computer Science and many Masters thesis; developed/coordinated a large number of courses in advanced topics in the field of software technology.
  8. Have undertaken expert consultancy missions for United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and also for United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). Such missions usually require one to visit the site of a UN aided project and provide professional consultancy on specialised topics to the executing agency. 
    UNIDO Expert in the area of Computer Graphics and Standards (1987), for providing consultancy to the State Centre for CAD in Sofia, Bulgaria.
    UNIDO Expert in the area of Computer Aided Design and Manufacture (1988), for providing consultancy to the State Centre for CAD in Sofia, Bulgaria. 
    UNDP Expert for providing consultancy to the Modern Cartographic Centre in Dehradun, (1992)
    UNDP Expert for carrying out the feasibility study and also to prepare the project proposal for setting a Multi media Documentation Centre at the Indira Gandhi Centre for the Arts, in the Departments of Arts and Culture, Government of India, New Delhi.
    During the year 1999, I have been a consultant to the Government of El Salvador for its Software Education and Training Programme conducted in different cities in India.
